Overview
Where to Stay on Gotland
Hotel in Visby, holiday home, camping or B&B: find the right place to stay on Gotland based on location, trip type, mobility and season.

Which accommodation suits your trip?
On Gotland, location matters almost as much as the type of accommodation. A cheap holiday home far out of the way can end up costing more once you add car hire and long distances than a room in Visby. On the other hand, a stuga (cottage) gives a family more space and saves on restaurant bills. So choose first by trip type and mobility, then by price.
| Accommodation | Best suited to | Main catch | Detail guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel in Visby | Short trip, first visit, travelling without a car | fills up early in high summer and around events | Hotels on Gotland |
| Holiday home / stuga | Family, group, a week or longer | often has fixed changeover days and extra fees | Holiday home guide |
| Camping | Tent, motorhome, close to the beach, flexible route | many sites are seasonal | Camping guide |
| B&B or farm stay | Personal, quiet accommodation in the countryside | often hard to reach without a vehicle | use the official accommodation search |
The best area to stay in
Visby: simple and manageable without a car
Visby is the best first base. The ferry terminal, old town, restaurants, bus station and most accommodation are all close together. For a short stay you won't need to hire a car; for individual day trips around the island you can add bus, bicycle or a rental car later. Inside the city walls you get atmosphere, while staying just outside is often more practical if you have a car and need parking.
West coast and Tofta: beach plus proximity to Visby
The west coast south of Visby combines short distances to the city with Tofta Beach and a range of holiday home and camping options. It suits families who want to alternate beach days with trips into town. Having a car makes planning noticeably more flexible.
The north and Fårö: landscape over infrastructure
The north and Fårö are the right choice if raukar rock formations, coastline and quiet matter more to you than a wide choice of restaurants or hotels. Factor in the free Fårö ferry, seasonal opening times and longer distances. For a short first visit, Visby is usually the easier base; for a longer nature-focused stay, the north can be the better choice.
East coast and the south: for longer, quieter stays
Ljugarn and the east coast offer beaches and coastal scenery away from the crowds in Visby. The south is more sparsely populated and particularly suits a holiday home if you have your own vehicle. Check shops, restaurants and things to do here on the Gotland map before you book.
Comparing prices without being misled
Accommodation prices on Gotland change by week, length of stay and demand. A single "from" price is therefore not a reliable guide for the island as a whole. Compare the total cost of your trip:
- final cleaning, bedding and towels for a holiday home,
- breakfast, parking and cancellation terms for a hotel,
- electricity, showers, vehicle and booking fees for camping,
- car hire or extra journeys if you're staying somewhere remote,
- possible minimum stays or fixed changeover days.
Prices are deliberately not mirrored here as a permanent table. For current offers, use the official accommodation search, contact the properties directly, or check the accommodation section of Destination Gotland.
When to book
Availability is tightest during the Swedish summer holidays and during major events in Visby. For Almedalen Week and Medieval Week, check dates and accommodation together before you lock in your travel arrangements. Outside these windows the choice is usually wider, but campsites, farm stays and holiday complexes may close seasonally.
A sensible order to work through:
- Decide on a region and how you'll get around.
- Check accommodation and cancellation terms.
- If you're bringing a car, secure your vehicle space on the ferry at the same time.
- Shortly before your trip, confirm opening hours, check-in and how to get there.
Decide in three questions
Only a few days and no car? Choose Visby and book a hotel or B&B.
Family, kitchen and a week to spare? Compare holiday homes on the west coast, east coast and in the south by total cost and distance.
Motorhome, tent or outdoors every day? Start with the camping guide and check the official rules on the right of public access (allemansrätten). It doesn't automatically permit free overnight parking with a motorhome or caravan.
