Sweden's repeatedly crowned dream beach

Sudersand lies in northeast Fårö and is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Sweden. That's not just marketing: the Fårö tourist office notes that Sudersand has "on repeated occasions been voted Sweden's best beach", and the operator cites the annual ranking by readers of Dagens Nyheter among the country's five most beautiful beaches.

The beach is a wide strip of white sand, lined with dunes, with shallow, clear water over a sandy bottom that slopes gently and evenly, ideal for families with children. Official figures on the actual length vary: the tourist office cites around 2.2 kilometres, the Hav och Vatten authority around 2.5 kilometres, the operator up to 3 kilometres, and marketing sources like to quote 5 kilometres. There's no single official figure, but there's certainly plenty of space either way.

Water, weather and the best time to visit

Sudersand is pleasantly shallow for swimming. The authority's official measurements show an average water temperature of around 15°C in June and just under 19°C in August; the most recent sample in early August 2025 came in at 18°C. Water quality was last rated "utmärkt kvalitet" (excellent).

• Best time: mid-June to mid-August, when the water is warmest.
• Quieter stretches: early morning or late afternoon - Fårö sees around 100,000 visitors in summer, and Sudersand is one of the island's most visited spots.
• Bathing season: the official bathing water sampling runs annually from 21 June to 15 August. The beach itself, as a public natural area, is open access year-round.

Getting there on the free ferry

Fårö is only reachable by ferry, and it's free. The Fårösundsleden line connects Fårösund on the main island with Broa on Fårö: a 1,300-metre crossing taking 6 minutes, running every 10-15 minutes during summer daytime hours. From Broa it's about a 20-minute drive north to Sudersand.

What to expect on the beach

Sudersand is well developed without losing its natural character. Right on the beach there are toilets, bins and rescue buoys, though no official source mentions a supervised lifeguard service. Food and drink is well covered:

• Tildes Eisbar, centrally located on the beach
• Sudersannas Grill & Bar, in the dunes, serving alcohol
• Majkens kök, by the pool and adventure golf area

There are several other restaurants on site too. For activities, there's SUP, pedal boats and RIB boat tours on the beach; bikes are hired separately through operator Sudersands Vintage Bike Rental. Camping and where to stay

Just behind the dunes is Sudersand Resort, the central campsite and the heart of the site. The campsite is open from 1 May to 30 September, with pitches from 375 SEK per night in the low season up to 710 SEK in high season; pitches closer to the beach cost up to 735 SEK, and motorhomes over 10 metres up to 795 SEK - all with electricity included. Showers at the campsite cost 5 SEK per 2 minutes.

Good to know

• Dogs: a dog ban applies on the beach from 1 May to 30 September (confirmed by both the tourist office and the authority).
