Camping in Gotland

Camping country with the sea close by

Gotland is well suited to camping: many sites sit right on the water, the terrain is flat and the summers are comparatively dry. The range runs from simple tent pitches to classic caravan and motorhome pitches, cabins and small beach cottages. Most sites cluster around Visby on the west coast, at the popular beach of Tofta and in the north on Fårö.

Worth knowing when planning: the classic camping season runs from early May to mid-September, with prices and full facilities picking up noticeably over the summer holidays (roughly late June to early August). If you're travelling with a caravan or motorhome during that period, book pitches early, on weekends and around Midsummer, sites near the beach fill up fast.

The campsites around Visby

In and around the Hanseatic town you'll find the widest choice, a handy base for exploring both the town and the island:

• Visby Strandby - Norderstrand: Gotland's only town campsite, right on the sea about 1 km north of the town wall (Snäckgärdsvägen 32). Pitches for caravans, motorhomes and tents (all with electricity), modern service buildings, around 80 camping cabins and WiFi included. Peak season is weeks 26-32, check-in 15:00 / check-out 11:00.
• Snäck Camping: on the northern edge of Visby, about 4 km from the centre (a 15-20 minute ride along the coastal cycle path). Around 60 pitches across three terraced levels, a service building with toilets, showers, a laundry and a kitchen, plus a restaurant with a pool and beach access. In 2026 a self-service tent pitch without electricity costs SEK 310, with a vehicle SEK 370. There's no staffed reception - contact is by text message or phone (+46 498 660 993).
• Kneippbyn Resort Visby: Gotland's only five-star campsite, about 3 km south of Visby, right next to Villa Kunterbunt (Pippi Longstocking's house) and the water park of the same name, the obvious choice for a trip with children.

Tofta: beach camping south of Visby

Tofta Camping sits right on the sea at the popular Tofta beach, about 15 minutes' drive (roughly 18 km) south of Visby (Toftavägen 362, 622 66 Gotlands Tofta; +46 498 29 71 02, [email protected]). There are pitches for caravans, motorhomes and tents directly by the beach, plus cabins and studios to hotel standard. Facilities include several restaurants, a pool, three padel courts, an outdoor gym and direct beach access.

Open from early May to mid-September. Reception hours follow the season: daily 10:00-15:00 in the shoulder season, daily 08:00-20:00 in peak season (late June to early August), then reduced hours through August. Pitch prices vary considerably by season, the most reliable source is a direct enquiry to the site.

Sudersand on Fårö: camping on a sand beach

In the north, the Sudersand Resort sits on Fårö on one of Gotland's best-known flat sandy beaches - every pitch is about 150 metres from the beach. It's the largest site in northern Gotland, with pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes as well as cabins and beach cottages. All camping pitches have electricity.

Sudersand publishes concrete per-night 2026 prices (caravan/motorhome, standard):

• Low season (weeks 18-24 and 34-39): from SEK 375.
• High season: rising to SEK 450-670, peaking in weeks 29-30 at SEK 670; pitches close to the beach up to SEK 695.
• Long motorhomes over 10 m: SEK 450-795 depending on the week.
• Season pitches for the whole season: from around SEK 19,300 (without electricity), from about SEK 20,300 near the beach. Surcharges apply around Midsummer and during "Fårönatta" (around +25%).

Getting there is straightforward: Fårö is reached via the free Trafikverket ferry on the Fårösundsleden route from Fårösund, the crossing takes only about six minutes (1,300 m) and runs year-round, in summer during the day without a reservation. Besides Sudersand, the north has several smaller sites, including Ekevikens Camping (north Fårö), Kappelshamns Camping (by the sea between Visby and Fårö, open year-round) and Norrvange Camping (with a playground).

By motorhome: getting there and pitches

Travelling with a motorhome means arriving by ferry. Destination Gotland serves Visby year-round from Nynäshamn (around 3 to 3.5 hours) and from Oskarshamn (around 3 hours), both on the Swedish mainland, with several daily departures and no maximum vehicle length. Fares are tiered by vehicle length (under 6 m / 6-9 m / over 9 m). The Alla+husbil package (up to five people plus a motorhome, one-way, booked online) starts in 2026 at around SEK 1,250 (under 6 m), SEK 1,350 (6-9 m) and SEK 1,450 (over 9 m). Booking online is cheaper than at the terminal or by phone (which carries a SEK 70 fee); the package can't be rebooked or refunded, though. More in the getting there guide and the ferry guide.

Besides the campsites, the island also has official pitches run by Region Gotland (chargeable, usually paid by machine or Swish):

• Visby: Norra vågbrytaren (10 spaces), Östra byrummet (11), Östra Polhemslunden (9).
• Other locations: Slite (4), Fårösund (8), Ronehamn (7), Vändburg (6), Botvaldevik (7).

A commercial alternative in Visby is Park and Stay Quickstop (Gutevägen 10), just a stone's throw from the harbour and the town wall.

The right to roam: what applies for tents and motorhomes

Sweden's right to roam (Allemansrätten) applies very differently to tents and to motorhomes. Three points matter:

• Tents: A short stay of one or two nights in the same spot is allowed in the open countryside (Naturvårdsverket suggests one night as a rule of thumb). There's no exact distance written into law, but case law puts the privacy zone around houses at roughly 70 to 100 metres, rule of thumb: out of sight and earshot, often around 70 metres.
• Motorhomes, caravans, roof tents: the right to roam does not apply here. Parking or staying overnight in the countryside (woods, beaches, fields, parks, lawns) is not allowed; off-road driving is banned by law. Staying off-site is only possible with the landowner's permission.
• Municipal pitches and rest areas: on marked pitches along public roads you may stay a maximum of 24 hours on weekdays, and until the next working day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, unless other signage applies. All wheels must stay within the white markings.

Overnight motorhome stays are banned in public spaces (streets, squares, parks), in central Visby, at certain beaches, and in nature reserves and national parks with special rules.
